Cardano’s hybrid paradigm is undergoing a gradual transformation towards full P2P networking, marking a significant shift in the blockchain’s operation. IOG, the governing body of Cardano, has given a sneak peek of the eagerly anticipated upgrade, Ouroboros Genesis. This upgrade will bring about a major improvement for Cardano by integrating peer-to-peer activities in its entirety.
Peer-to-peer networking greatly enhances the decentralization, security, and resilience of the blockchain. By enabling direct transmission and synchronization of data among participants, the need for intermediaries is eliminated. Cardano has made steady progress in transitioning from its hybrid paradigm to full P2P networking in recent months.
The introduction of Cardano’s Dynamic P2P technology in March 2023 paved the way for automating peer selection procedures. The upgrade to node v.1.35.6 further simplified the role of relay and block-producing nodes and improved communication between dispersed nodes. Static setups were replaced with dynamic ones, eliminating the need for manual input from stake pool operators (SPOs).
IOG has tantalized the Cardano community with the announcement of the upcoming Ouroboros Genesis upgrade. This is just the first step in a series of modifications, with the complete Chang upgrade scheduled for the summer. During the genesis phase of the Cardano network, a predetermined selection of nodes will be able to function autonomously.
Ouroboros Genesis serves as a building block for Chang, streamlining the network setup process for newly-connected nodes. Currently, a node must obtain a secure SPO from a validator before joining the network, which then requires coordination with another reliable SPO or organization. With the integration of Ouroboros Genesis, this coordination becomes unnecessary as the autonomous process takes over.
