Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, recently discussed the fundamentals of Layer-2 protocols in a blog post. He highlighted that Layer 2-centric ecosystems are inherently pluralistic, serving as cultural extensions of the Ethereum network. Buterin emphasized that the key difference between Layer-1 and Layer-2 protocols lies in their organizational aspects rather than technological disparities.
According to Buterin, the impact of blurring boundaries between different components of an ecosystem goes beyond what can be built and extends to people’s motivations and actions. Layer 2-centric ecosystems possess the inherent ability to encourage various methods for scaling, designing virtual machines, and other technical attributes.
Buterin also reiterated his previous comment about Ethereum acting as a hub for developers to autonomously construct sub-ecosystems. These sub-ecosystems can have their own unique characteristics while still relying on Ethereum. Culture, along with technology, plays a significant role in these categorizations.
Notably, the well-known researcher Paul Dylan-Ennis has extensively studied Ethereum subcultures, including Cyherpunk, Regens, and Degens. Each subculture has distinct traits, but the versatility of Ethereum as a platform allows them to compete through action rather than mere discussions.
